Advanced Communicator Day: Unions and the fight against the far right
Room: Okanagan

During the pandemic, the far right found common cause with people who opposed COVID-related public health measures. Their movements managed to shut down borders and downtown Ottawa for weeks, while police and politicians stood back and watched it unfold.

Where was the labour movement during these flashpoints? Many people called for help from unions, and there was a mixed reaction — some condemned far right protests, others encouraged their members to protest them, but there was generally a lack of coordinated action from labour to help support counter protests and organize against the far right.

Organized labour and trade unions are the strongest line of defense against rising fascism. So how do we organize within our unions to fight the far right, both within our memberships and also within our communities? In this workshop, delegates will have an immersive workshop that will develop strategies for confronting the far right through union resources and tools. The workshop will be facilitated by organizers with the Canadian AntiHate Network.
