Hosted by UFCW Local 832, this day-long mini-conference will feature workshops on media relations, design, research methods, and more.
Workshops & Presenters
Progressive Finance Policy Research and Knowledge Mobilization
Public services in Manitoba continue to feel the strain of $1.6 billion in tax cuts between 2016 – 2023. Last year, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba office mobilized with labour partners to publish an open letter to Premier Kinew calling for increased investment in services like health and education by reversing the tax cuts. Learn how this had an impact, and how CCPA uses research, commentary and public education to propose alternative public policy.
Photography workflow and Digital Asset Management (DAM)
So you just shot way too many photos at an event and you only need eight images for your Facebook post, three for your Instagram and two really good ones for your newsletter. This workshop will show you a process to quickly review and decide what to keep. It will cover some file-naming schemes, what do with all these photos you have on your hard drive and some ideas on how to make your photos easily accessible to others inside and outside your organization. This workshop primarily covers Adobe software, but will help you get organized even if you’re just using the default software on your computer.
Developing a communications strategy for change-makers
Learn how to develop a communications strategy that will help your union or social justice organization achieve your mission and accomplish your goals. In this presentation, you’ll learn about thinking strategically, why your union needs a communications strategy, how to overcome potential challenges when developing a communications strategy, and more.
Media Relations
Amp up your media relations work! This workshop by Nora Loreto will show you ways to get your message into the faces of your members and the public at large. Learn how to craft a compelling narrative and speak in such a way that your message rises above the fray!
Using Canva effectively
Unions have rapidly moved to using Canva in their communications work, but are you using it its full capacity? In this workshop, delegates will learn all about Canva and, importantly, how to get the most out of your design work.
Building workers’ power through better building workers’ power events
In this meta workshop, delegates will learn new ways to energize their members as they build solidarity and power among their members. The workshop will not be a workshop about building workers’ power but instead, how we can borrow new tactics to strengthen our own local workshops. Delegates will engage in role-playing, brainstorming and sharing stories about what has worked and what has failed in our organizing experiences.
