Workshops

iPhone videography
The use of video to tell a story has exploded thanks to smartphones and various social media platforms. However, getting a good short video is much more than point and shoot. Learn what makes for good video and how proper preparation, framing, background and sound can get your video noticed…and watched! You must have a video- equipped smartphone for this workshop.

Radical Accountability and Labour

This workshop will introduce the concept of radical accountability, what it means and how to operationalize it in union communications. Participants will engage in an informative and interactive workshop that will prompt them to consider how they contribute to broader movement-building practices, including elevating anti-oppression. Navigating radical accountability and social justice movements, participants will unpack healthy critique of union practices of the past and present.

Crisis Communications
Learn how to keep calm as you weather the media storm when your organization gets hit with a crisis. Chelsea Connor, a veteran communicator on both sides of the Canada-US border, will walk you through how to plan ahead and what to do when the unexpected hits. Learn from her mistakes, see what works and what doesn’t, and get an insider’s perspective on how to be responsive to media demands. This is an advanced-level workshop.

Nailing the interview
When a member of the media calls a union leader asking for comment on a story, what are they looking for? What are the expectations the reporter or host may have? And what are the best ways to get your message to the public? Craig Needles has worked in news at various outlets for two decades as a reporter, talk show host and more and he shares his thoughts on how a relationship between a union spokesperson and the media should work.
